Chapter 7

The day after, Rosie was arriving at the mall hurriedly. She was somewhat late for work. But it wasn’t her fault, she told herself. Her head was just a mess. She hadn’t had a minute of rest since a week ago when a beautiful woman – a vampire – had walked in on her life. With a handful of answers on her pockets, Rosie was now a little more comfortable with the mystery that was Cate. But still, there was so much to figure out and so many fears to move past.

In her troubled state of mind, she hadn’t even noticed the crowd that was gathered at the doors of the mall until she almost knocked into somebody. She scanned the crowd for a familiar face and found one of her coworkers who, when prompted, explained to her that there had been an accident, a security issue within the mall. There had been a violent fight, some strange people had broken in the mall and attacked somebody.

This encouraged a series of memories to flash in Rosie’s mind. First, Cate’s trembling hand with a blood stain, they day they met. Second, a frightened man running away from Cate. Lastly, a memory of Rosie herself telling Cate that every time she showed up to the theater something terrible happened. The conclusion reached Rosie with a chill. Could a powerful creature like Cate be in trouble somewhere? If so, would Rosie be of any help?

Regardless of what the logical side of her brain told her, Rosie started moving again. She swam through the mass the people; she stood on her tiptoes, she considered shouting Cate’s name. Unable to catch sight of a blonde head with majestic blue eyes, Rosie parted from the crowd and started to round the mall. Since everything had been closed for the day, the parking lot was almost empty. It was unnerving. So, after a few moments, Rosie lost momentum, and her pace slowed down as she nervously looked around.

Without warning, her fears became a reality when she heard a rough masculine voice call from behind her, “Give me your purse, pretty girl, and I won’t hurt you too much.”

Rosie’s heart sped up considerably, but her instincts told her to keep walking. Maybe she could reach the exit and the crowd of people, and she’d be safe. She had no such luck. The robber kept calling her out; he began to spit obscenities at noticing she wasn’t slowing down. But at some point, he shouted “Hey!” and it sounded different, it wasn’t directed at her.

Against her better knowledge, she turned around quickly, preparing to run if the man was about to catch her. Instead, Rosie found herself looking at a breathtaking sight.

“If you would have touched her, I would kill you in a flash. Now, say you’re sorry for scaring the lady.” Cate was talking menacingly into the man’s face.

She was standing tall, looking as imposing as ever, although her hair and clothes looked somewhat a mess. With only one hand she had caught the man and was holding him in the hair from the collar of his shirt.
